Congratulations Barack Obama

I'm pretty sure you've all heard by now. Barack Obama has been elected the next President of the United States of America with Joe Biden as his Vice President.

A race which started exactly 10 months ago for me when I made my first US election blogpost following the Iowa election where I pondered the idea of a Presidential race between the two winners of the caucus - Huckabee and Obama. I was half right.

Thirteen days later, I had to eliminate both Bill Richardson and Ron Paul from my election watch in spite of them being my favourite candidates. This came right after the Michigan primary which was won by Romney for the Republicans and Clinton for the Democrats - even though Michigan's delegates were not being counted at that stage. Read it here.

By January 30th I predicted that Clinton would take the nomination after beating Obama in Florida - which at that stage was not going to have its delegates counted like Michigan above. Needless to say, I was wrong.

It was just a few days later when I predicted that Romney would get the Republican nomination and go on to face Clinton in November after his victory in Maine and a few hours before Super Tuesday. Once again...I was wrong.

John McCain and Barack Obama would go on to become the nominees and it would be a while before we got more news on that front. In fact, it was six months later when Joe Biden and Sarah Palin were named as running mates.

One month later, following the first Presidential Debate, it was clear that Barack Obama was going to win the election and for once in this election cycle, I was right. I was also right in 2004 when I supported Bush. By 'right' I mean, he won.

So here we are. The beginning of November. I've finished Sixth Form and completed my A levels. Finally went to Disneyland and am currently living a hell hole, road to nowhere of a life at the university of malta (neither have been capitalised on purpose. I'm not feeling very mavericky, I'll tell you that. But with the next President now elected it's time to look at the road ahead.

My blogging ends here (US election-wise) so I need to conclude in this one, last blogpost.

Firstly, the first African American President of the United States. Wouldn't have bothered me either way, but it's a great achievement. Next step, a black Pope and then no one can cite racial inequality anymore.

Secondly, Joe Biden. I've said it a number of times that politically I don't really like him. Personally, he seems like a nice guy. Here's hoping he'll make a good Vice President.

What will the cabinet look like? Personally, I hope to see Biden's prediction of Richardson as a Secretary of State come true. Obama could then go for the All-Star Cabinet and bring in Hillary Clinton which will bring him even closer to the former-Clinton supporters. What about John McCain? Will Obama reach across the aisle now that McCain seems to have returned to his old self and seek to unite the supporters of both parties (a multi-party candidate was once suggested by Richardson in a primary debate...he went on to say "Democrats, Independents, Republicans...I'll go easy on the Republicans". I may or may not be paraphrasing). Naturally, if Obama does nominate McCain for a cabinet position, he'll have to nominate him for a post where they won't conflict in views. Secretary of State is out of the question. Same goes for Treasury and anything related to Social Policy. Except perhaps, Veterans Affairs.

Whatever the case, best wishes to my American friends and family from,
Darryl from Malta - Online.
